There is no single oil choice for every 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 Power Stroke. The right starting point is the Ford specification and viscosity for your model year and driving conditions. Once those are settled, AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty is our top choice for owners who want premium protection, especially when a truck tows, idles or works hard. Here is the case for it, and where the limits are.
What oil does your Power Stroke need?
Check the oil section of your truck’s owner’s manual for the exact specification, SAE grade and service interval. Ford’s current 6.7L guidance, for example, calls for WSS-M2C171-F1 and lists 10W-30 for ordinary service and 5W-40 as an alternative for severe duty. Requirements differ by engine and model year. An API CK-4 label alone is not a substitute for checking the Ford requirement.
Before you buy: see Ford’s 6.7L oil specification example and look up your exact truck. Verify the current product data and Ford requirements for your vehicle.
Why oil matters in a hard-working diesel
Soot, heat and long periods of idling put a diesel oil to work. Fuel dilution can also matter on engines with regeneration systems, especially if duty cycles interrupt regeneration. Towing adds sustained heat and load. Good filtration, the correct oil and on-time maintenance all matter; even a premium oil cannot repair an injector, cooling or turbo problem.
How the four Power Stroke generations differ
7.3L Power Stroke
The 7.3L uses engine oil in its high-pressure hydraulic injector system. Oil condition and viscosity can affect injector operation, particularly on a cold start. Follow the manual for your model year and use the correct filter and interval.
6.0L Power Stroke
The 6.0L also uses a high-pressure oil system to actuate its injectors. Clean oil matters, but injector or high-pressure-system symptoms deserve diagnosis rather than an automatic oil-brand change. Use the Ford specification applicable to your model year.
6.4L Power Stroke
The 6.4L has a particulate filter and regeneration system. Ford’s owner guidance specifically warns that fuel dilution can become a serious issue. Watch oil level and service requirements, especially with short-trip or heavy-idle use. Oil analysis can help measure dilution instead of guessing.
6.7L Power Stroke
The 6.7L’s Ford specification and viscosity guidance deserve close attention. Some model years specify 5W-40 for severe duty, while 10W-30 may be listed for normal service. Use the manual for your exact year rather than a blanket “all 6.7s take 5W-40” rule.

Which AMSOIL diesel oil should you use?
AMSOIL gives Power Stroke owners three sensible levels of protection. We favor Signature Series for the owner who wants AMSOIL’s strongest diesel-oil performance, but Heavy-Duty and Commercial-Grade also have a place. The right product still depends on your truck’s year, Ford specification, required viscosity and service conditions.
| Commercial-Grade | Heavy-Duty | Signature Series Max-Duty | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base oil | Synthetic blend (over 50% synthetic) | 100% synthetic | 100% synthetic |
| Grades | 10W-30, 15W-40 | 10W-30, 5W-40, 15W-40 | 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, 15W-40 |
| DD13 wear result | 2X | 4X | 6X |
| Best fit | Factory intervals on a budget | More margin on factory intervals | Towing, hard work, maximum protection |
AMSOIL Commercial-Grade Diesel Oil
This is the budget-minded choice for an owner following the factory service interval who wants an upgrade over conventional oil. It is a synthetic blend with more than 50% synthetic content, offered in 10W-30 and 15W-40. AMSOIL reports 2X the wear protection required in the Detroit Diesel DD13 scuffing test. See Commercial-Grade product details.
AMSOIL Heavy-Duty 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil
Heavy-Duty is a very good full-synthetic step up for owners who want more protection margin while generally following Ford’s oil-change interval. It comes in 10W-30, 5W-40 and 15W-40. AMSOIL reports 4X the wear protection required in the same DD13 scuffing test. The 10W-30 grade was used for this test. See Heavy-Duty product details.
AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty 100% Synthetic Diesel Oil

Signature Series is our top choice for the Power Stroke owner who tows, works the truck hard or simply wants AMSOIL’s highest diesel protection tier. It offers the strongest published wear result of these three lines, along with the oil-consumption and cleanliness performance discussed below. That does not make the other AMSOIL oils inadequate for a properly matched truck. See Signature Series product details.
Commercial-Grade currently has no 5W-40 option. If Ford calls for 5W-40 for your service, look at the matching Heavy-Duty or Signature Series grade instead. Check the exact year and model in the AMSOIL vehicle lookup, and follow the Ford specification and service guidance. The 2X, 4X and 6X figures compare each oil with the DD13 test requirement; they do not predict engine life or show a direct head-to-head Power Stroke test. Why we recommend AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty
AMSOIL is not the only oil capable of protecting a Power Stroke. We recommend Signature Series Max-Duty because it brings strong published performance evidence for wear control, viscosity control, oil consumption and cleanliness. Those advantages are most interesting for owners who tow, keep their trucks for years or put them through severe service.
Wear protection with a defined test behind it
In third-party Detroit Diesel DD13 scuffing testing, AMSOIL reports that Signature Series Max-Duty delivered six times the wear protection required by the DFS 93K222 standard. The 5W-30 grade was used for this test. That is a meaningful laboratory result, but it does not mean a Power Stroke will last six times longer or avoid a particular repair.
Control when oil runs hot
AMSOIL reports that Signature Series resists oxidation and soot-related thickening and retains viscosity after high-temperature service. In the Caterpillar 1N test it showed up to 76% less oil consumption than the API CK-4 limit. That comparison is to the test limit, not a promise that your truck will use 76% less oil than it does today.
Engine and turbo cleanliness
AMSOIL also reports up to 60% better turbo cleanliness based on the CAT C13 second-ring top-land carbon test standard. Cleanliness is one reason we favor it for hard use, though a test result cannot replace proper maintenance or diagnose a failing turbo. Review the current Signature Series 5W-40 product details and test notes.
Can oil analysis help?
Yes. A used-oil report can measure wear metals, soot, fuel dilution, viscosity and other indicators. One sample gives a snapshot; samples taken consistently over time are more useful for finding a trend and evaluating a service interval. Oil analysis is surprisingly economical compared with guessing about a hard-working engine. See the Oil Analyzers test kit. Follow Ford’s maintenance guidance, and use test results with a qualified technician when a problem appears.

Power Stroke oil FAQ
Can I use 5W-40 in a 6.7 Power Stroke?
Often, yes, but check your manual first. Ford lists 5W-40 for severe duty on some 6.7L model years and 10W-30 for normal service. Use the grade Ford specifies for your year and how you use the truck, and make sure the oil meets the Ford specification.
Why does oil matter so much in a 7.3 or 6.0 Power Stroke?
Both engines use engine oil under high pressure to fire their injectors. That means oil condition and viscosity affect injector operation, not just lubrication, and cold starts are where it shows most. Injector symptoms still deserve a proper diagnosis rather than an automatic oil change.
Is synthetic diesel oil worth it in a Power Stroke?
For trucks that tow, idle a lot or run hot, a full synthetic gives more margin against heat, soot thickening and wear. For a lightly used truck on the factory interval, a quality oil that meets Ford’s specification may be enough. Oil analysis is the best way to see how your oil is actually holding up.
How often should I change the oil in my Power Stroke?
Follow the interval in your owner’s manual, or your truck’s oil-life monitor if it has one, and shorten it for severe service like heavy towing or long idling. If you want to go longer between changes, use oil analysis to confirm the oil is still in good condition.
